Several months since my last blog..........family history research continues with several new finds.............enjoying a sunny day at home.......

What a beautiful day today.............spent most of the day in the garden.......had surprise visitors........a swarm of noisy bees invaded the back garden, had to take shelter in the house until they went away..............shades of Hitchcock for those who can remember that far back!

Reunion Stuff etc......

It's now just over 4 weeks SINCE the Saunders reunion...........it was a great weekend, caught up with a few cousins I hadn't seen for a while and others I had never met before or had not known of in some cases!
However, we now have quite a group in an email loop and hope to keep in contact with them all. There was some talk of another reunion in 2012, which will be good.
Since the reunion, more family info has come to light.....including photos etc., always good to have.

Four weeks today and the Saunders reunion in Portland (Victoria Australia) should be well underway.......Have been burning the midnight oil putting together a booklet about the family. Nicholas Saunders and Elizabeth Tytherleigh arrived in Portland in 1857, although on the same ship, we are fairly certain that they didn't start the voyage knowing each other, however the romantic in me imagines that they may have indeed started their romance on board the 'Mary Ann'. They married in Portland in on 4th September 1860, 150 years ago, hence the reason for the reunion!

Where does time go..............it's been a few months since my last blog......have been busy with lots of things, not least of which is my family stuff.......have been doing a lot of work on the Higgins side of the family.......with lots of help from new cousins.............
The Saunders Reunion site is no longer......however the reunion will go ahead regardless................

Have just had a few days with my favourite Uncle, lots of discussion regarding the Saunders Family Reunion.............note with concern that the reunion web site has all but been dismantled.....not sure why.

Where did autumn go.....................it feels as though winter has arrived early..........but we have had some more lovely rain so not going to complain about that! It's been a busy week, back to work, went to the footy Friday night and saw the mighty Saints clock up another good win........the usual Saturday shopping/lunch and a lovely day at home yesterday catching up on family tree matters................have found a Dyson/Sherlock cousin through genesreunited and a distant Appleyard contact through AUS-Tasmania Genealogy. Not to mention our Dennis/Bird/Rowden riddle.................

My holidays are almost over but I've had a great time..............had 10 days in Townsville catching up with my brother..............was there at the same time cyclone Ului was threatening, however it made landfall further south except for some heavy rain a few days later.

It's been a very wet long weekend, lots and lots of rain, not just here but over areas that have still been in the grip of the drought.
It's also been a busy weekend for me, we celebrated my 60th birthday (a week early) with family and friends.......we had a lovely lunch on Sunday, my son and daughter in law came all the way from Perth to surprise me.......it was lovely to catch up with them............

Just back from a Rotary gig in Halls Gap, 2 days of training for the in-coming Presidents, plus a fait bit of rest and relaxation......
On the family history front, things are ticking over nicely. Our Dennis cousins keep coming up with tantilising 'pages' from the past and the Saunders reunion is shaping up quite well.
And so it goes...............

It's been a while, still plugging away at the family stuff, we now have 7 Dennis cousins in an email circle with descendants of Ethel Rosie (2), Ernest James (2), Harry Harold , Frederick George & Lydia Ann, all children of Henry Dennis & Fanny Higgins. Amazing stuff!
Weather here quite humid, still waiting for some decent rain.....

Day after Australia Day (spent relaxing by the pool), following up more Dennis doings, this time Dorothy Lyla, daughter of Ernest James Dennis & Lucinda Bird. Seems she went to South Australia to live with 2 of her Bird aunts...............Dotty died in Adelaide SA in 1919 aged 19! Waiting on her death certificate in the hope that it gives up a few clues.......

Family business going very well, in particular with the Dennis mob. Have re-established contact with Peter Dennis, who is descendant from Ernest James Dennis's first family. I sent him 2 photos of EJ, never thinking that they would be the first photos he had ever seen of his gr.grandfather!!

Sitting here, home for lunch, we've just had an all too brief spring storm after several days of summer heat.............temp is supposed to drop but could do with lots more rain..........

On the family history front, we spent last weekend in Tasmania, stayed in Hobart at the Grand Chancellor, not far from where Peter Appleyard and later Harriet Wheatley would have come ashore.............he as a convict in 1834 and Harriet with members of her family.

Here it is, Sunday................a bit of housework (not too much), some gardening and then on to the family history research..............and later catching up with some good friends for a few 'moving house drinkies'..........

Sunday in Ballarat is by the way, very warm............just lovely and more to come according to the weather man.

Apart from continuing work on our Saunders family................this week I've ordered the birth and death certificates for Ernest William Dennis, son of Ernest James and Lucinda (Bird) Dennis, also stumbled across a grave photo of Dorothy Lyla Dennis, daughter of EJ and Lucinda! I remember my father telling me that he had seen a photo of Dorothy's grave. She died in 1919 suposdly from TB. Have ordered the photo.

Lastly have finally got to sending for the updated DVD for Ian Marr's Cemeteries of South West Victoria.

Saunders Reunion

The Saunders Reunion is planned for September 2010...................at the moment we are busy collating family history and trying to contact as many descendants of Nicholas Saunders and Elizabeth Tytherleigh as possible.
There are plans to place a commemorative plaque on the Immigration Wall on the Portland waterfront, along with a day tour to Condah.

William Henry (Harry) Saunders

My WH Saunders, or Harry as he was known, was born in Branxholme VIC in April 1865. His parents were Nicholas & Elizabeth (Tytherleigh) Saunders. At some time, and we really don't know when, Harry moved to Queensland where, in 1907, he married Amelia May King. They were married at Wooroorooka QLD. He was 42 and Amelia was 21. Harry was in QLD in 1903 where he appears on the electrol roll at Wooroorooka.

Their children were Susan born 1908 Wooroorooka, George 1910 Thargominda, William 1911 Thargomindah, Ruby 1914 Rubyvale Station, Norma 1917 Charleville, Mona 1919 Charleville, Alma 1921 Charleville and Douglas 1925.

Update on Dennis Twigs

Following on with Rebecca Dennis, her two children sadly died within days of each other in January 1852 - William was 4 and Mary 2. Rebecca had passed away the year before in July, as did her mother Charlotte, a very sad time for the Dennis family. It would be very interesting to find out the cause of death of all four. John Gibson had remarried on 31 December 1851, 6 months after Rebecca had died. His new bride was 20 years old when they married, presumably William and Mary lived with them until their untimely deaths a few short weeks later.

John & Hannah went on to have 8 children, 2 of whom died in infancy.

Have spent some time over the last few days searching through the English census for the family of Rebecca Dennis, daughter of Richard & Charlotte (Perrin). Rebecca was born around 1821 in Bardney Lincolnshire and married John Jeremiah Gibson in 1848, also in Bardney. They had 2 children, William Henry born 1848 and Mary Ann born 1850, both born and baptised in Bardney. The family were living in Bardney at the time of the 1851 census.....

Well, what a day! Weather has returned to winter and the Saints lost the footy!! Just as well I have the family history to play with.....................
Have been doing some work on the Saunders family..................there will be a Saunders reunion in September 2010.................plans are afoot to celebrate the arrival of Nicholas Saunders (1818-1898) in Portland Victoria Australia in January 1857. Nicholas hailed from Cornwall. He married Elizabeth Tytherleigh in Portland in 1860. More details later...............
